Vienna is an idea often floated around when you’re considering a city break to escape it all back home. Ideal for both the high temperatures of Summer and the cold of Winter. I used it as the central stop for my interrail trip in the Summer of 2017 and I’m so glad I did. We only had 48 hours there and the first day was spent exploring ‘Schönbrunn Palace‘. If you’re in Vienna, I’d recommend a day trip to this wonderful place.
Located about 15 minutes in an uber from the city centre, this baroque palace was once the summer home of the Habsburg rulers but now is a major tourist attraction. The sheer scale of this place will wow you from the get-go. Whilst we didn’t actually pay the entrance fee to look inside the palace, we found plenty of alternatives to occupy our time here so here is my guide to the 3 best things to do here.
3. Take a wander a
round the Gardens.
Now, this may seem like an obvious one, but trust me. DO IT! The gardens are massive, and you’ll probably end up getting a bit lost in them as I did. I don’t know what it is about treelined pathways but I absolutely love them; the symmetry, the simplicity, it just pleases me. You’ll find flower gardens, containing every coloured flower you could imagine. Fountains are always a staple of any impressive garden I think, and you’ll find a number of different ones if you explore enough.
If you wander far enough, you’ll come across a Roman Ruin. Although it looks real and original, it’s actually artificial and was built in 1778. My personal favourite area though was the Obelisk Fountain as it stands out as a wonderful piece of art. It’s one of the main focal points of the gardens and was built in 1777. Make sure you try and find it if you take a visit.
2. Visit the Tiergarten Zoo.
It’s no secret that I absolutely love a zoo, an in-fact I’ll probably do a separate post about the Tiergarten Zoo in the future. Like I said above, the gardens at Schönbrunn are so massive, they have a full zoo in them. Can you imagine having your own zoo in your garden? Crazy huh. It just so happens to be the oldest zoo in operation today, having been opened in 1752.
I love the layout of the zoo, as it twists up and down the hillside giving you some ridiculous views of Vienna itself. I hate zoo’s if they don’t give the animals a big enough enclosure or enough stimulation, but you don’t need to worry about it here. Both are well catered for. You can find Polar Bears, Pandas, Rhinos, Giraffes, Penguins, Orangutans, Sloth Bears, Bats and so much more. I can’t recommend it highly enough and it’s a must-visit for when you take a trip to Schönbrunn.
1. Take in the View from the Gloriette!
You’ll see why this is my number one thing to do when visiting Schönbrunn! If you want a gorgeous view of the palace itself, and Vienna in the background then this is the place for you. The Gloriette is perched right at the top of the hill which originally was a war memorial but is now a cafe and the ideal place to chill and take it all in. We decided to just lie on the grass in the sunshine for about an hour or so. When you are travelling a lot, relaxing in the sun is a thing of beauty and the views always add to that. Take a drink, wander around and just bask in the glorious surrounding you’re in. I think I’ll just let the photos do the talking here.
There you have it, my top things to do when visiting Schönbrunn Palace in Vienna, Austria. Have you been here before? Make sure you let me know how you found it in the comments below and if you fancy it, share this out for people who want to visit.
